HANDLING OVERQUALIFIED EMPLOYEES

Some employees are overeducated and overqualified for a certain job, but their talents are exposed not a way a normal employee does the job. More talented employees are hired based on their over qualification for the innovative ideas and the experience in the certain firm and to obtain maximum smart work. Advantage of having overqualified employees in a work place

-          Agency: When the employees have autonomy, they have the capacity to influence in the work without any help or they don’t need any assistance rather than being expected to take a passive, cog-in-a-machine approach to work.

 Similar talented co-workers: If several overqualified employees are working in a place the work environment will be powered and the expected productivity will be achieved in time rather assisting normally qualified people in the work.

 Appreciation: Even they are overqualified to a particular job, company must appreciate their quality of work by rewarding them and proper reward management has to be influenced here to make them stay for a long period of time in a certain company. (Berrin. E, 2017)

 Avoid Legal Questions: someone who has over qualified can be seen as a way to avoid the appearance of discrimination thus reducing the risk of claim.

  Reduce training Cost: someone who has more qualified training is not necessary.

Disadvantage of having overqualified employees in a work place

-          Turnover risk is high : leaving the job risk is very high

-          Boredom is also a risk : frustrated and having negative influence on morale over time

-    Skill set may need refreshed: if the higher skill set is not a guaranteed of having the updated technological knowledge.

How to handle overqualified employees in a work place

-          Step 01: Identifying what made the employer to be qualified. e.g: in which part of work or study he/she has overqualified.

-          Step 02: Identifying the employee’s interest on the job- by asking him/her about the job, salary, convenient work hours etc. to ensure the interest in the job role.

-          Step 03: Based on the company’s growth, decide whether the employee’s talent is worth for betterment of the company.

-          Step 04: Being candid to get the expectations from the employer (salary system per day or hour basis, working times etc) and squeeze them in a way to accommodate within the company’s scale and negotiating with the employee can retain him/her in the job to perform well. Conclusion

Based on the capacity of the employer a company can decide to retain or not in the company, also considering the experience by over qualifications will be more helpful to reach goals in a short time for a company. Therefore, overqualified employees are profitable anyway considering normally skilled employees.
